Soil Chemistry & Mapping: A Kid’s Science Workshop (Suggested Ages 8-14)

May 14 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

$33.85

Get outside and test soil sample for their pH while learning fundamental science concepts in the environment!

Location: SEEDS, 706 Gilbert St, Durham

Our mission is packed into a fast-paced 90-minute investigation, transforming the garden into a living dataset:

Participants will investigate soil as a measurable system, with emphasis on pH and spatial patterning.

Part 1: Soil Properties (25 min)

  • Identify soil texture (sand, silt, clay) using the ribbon test
  • Measure soil pH and understand its role in nutrient availability

Part 2: Field Sampling (35 min)

  • Collect samples from distinct zones: garden beds, compost, shaded areas, and compacted paths
  • Measure pH and moisture using standard field methods

Part 3: Data Mapping (30 min)

  • Plot results on a grid to visualize spatial variation
  • Identify patterns (gradients) in soil chemistry across the site
  • Use pH as a predictor of plant growth potential

This session focuses on generating and interpreting real environmental data.
